Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Injury LawStars attorney Katie Miller took part in the 6th Annual Bunks Across America event held on September 14th. Along with other participants, Katie helped build 60 beds to be distributed locally, ensuring children in need have access to safe and comfortable sleeping arrangements.
The event is an initiative by Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a non-profit committed to providing beds for children in need. SHP chapters across North America came together to build and deliver safe, comfortable beds for these children.
SHP’s motto is “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor In Our Town.” The organization started in a small garage in 2012 and has now grown to have over 300 chapters around the US. It also has an international presence, with operators in four countries.
A safe and comfortable bed is a basic necessity for a child’s well-being, yet thousands of children are deprived of this fundamental need. A restful night’s sleep is not only important for the physical health of the child but also essential for their emotional health and mental development.
The data suggest that there is a national bed crisis for children in the country. According to the SHP, roughly 2-3% of children in the US are without beds. That’s a staggeringly high number for one of the most advanced and developed countries in the world. No child in the US should have to suffer bedlessness. However, this is an unfortunate reality.
Several studies have highlighted the importance of a good night’s sleep for a child. A child who does not get good sleep regularly can suffer from joint pain, back problems, weakened immune system support, lowered self-esteem, and reduced focus. In addition, the child can suffer from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
The SHP aims to activate over 15,000 volunteers to build 8,000 beds in a single day. The goal for 2024 is the largest undertaking in the SHP’s history. While this goal may seem ambitious, the unwavering commitment and dedication of the volunteers make it possible.
